Notes
This is a good image to help visualize the height of the Columbia River flood of May 1948. While the bridge approach has been replaced, the main span and concrete piers are substantially the same as they are today. We previously saw images of the flood here and here.

Just shows how far bridge construction has progressed over the years. I do remember this flood, basically the destruction of Vanport. The photos are still vivid in a child’s mind that appeared in the Portland papers. It was quite scary.

As bad as the 1948 flood was (1 million CFS peak at the Dalles) the 1894 flood was worse (1.2 million CFS peak at the Dalles).

This is an amazing photo. The spill at the Bonneville Dam must have been fantastic. The day of the Vanport flood was the day we moved from 701 Prospect out to Belmont Road…….

In this 1948 flood the tie mill I was working for at Cooks closed because of the high water. We helped anchor it as much as possible, I a non swimmer out on the logs with no life jacket and a pike pole. Next stop was Portland to help the national guard in the clean up of Vanport and I have no idea if the mill ever re opened. Each weekend the owners, I believe named Fossi, came up in a big car, you gave them your hours and were handed cash with no withholdings.
