I believe this aerial view was from 1935 when the Army Corps of Engineers was completing the survey for the Bonneville Dam project. Yes, those are ice flows in the Columbia River. There is a series of overlapping frames so you can even see them moving between exposures.
I think these images were used to prepare the very detailed maps which identified all the property which would be flooded when the dam started to form Lake Bonneville.

It’s pretty fascinating to look at the historic difference in the deltas between the White and Hood, where one is primarily fed from steep glaciers and the other is fed from low angle glaciers and lava tubes.

I find the north shore roads fascinating. I think you can see the old White Salmon Bridge crossing upstream. Previous to 1937 traffic traveled from Cooks along the hills to Underwood then wound its way down to this bridge.
It does look like there is a road along the east side of the White Salmon River.
It looks like Highway 141 leaves White Salmon and travels through Pucker Huddle as it does today, but then it takes a sharp curve west???

Hwy 141 keeps going north, it’s Pucker Huddle Road that takes off to the west just after 141 turns north. This is an awesome view!

The governor of Washington state arrived to dedicate the the new portion of the Evergreen Highway between Cooks and Bingen.
The Rainbow girls presented to the governor, the name "Rainbow Trail" suggestive of the "land where the rain and sunshine meet"…..
Mr. McEwen presented the poem:
The Rainbow Trail
Here we live in a wonderland,
In this sunny land sublime;
Where sunsets glow, big apples grow,
And it’s summer most all the time….

Interesting to see what may be old road bed from the short-lived roan that ran from Highway 8 (now 14) from the river up to Pucker Huddle. It takes off from teh highway just west of the east side of the picture and heads up the bluff. you can still sometimes see the old grade from a few places in HR.
