Just a few days into his Alaska adventure, we see Alva Day clamming near Ketchikan on April 4, 1917. He demonstrates the keen eye for composition that we’ve seen in much later works of his.
Arthur, it is so nice to be able to put a face to Alva since we’ve heard so much about him. This is a great picture.

I have clammed on these beaches. They are much harder to dig in than our sandy Washington and Oregon beaches. There are chunks of coal in the sand.
Looking through the Alva Day tag of photos, it is noticeable that his later photos became clearer. I suppose better equipment.

Seeing this photo makes me suspect even more, that your Mystery Monday #230 could possibly be a coastal photo.

I asked my husband if he knew what kind of clams. He didn’t know for sure, but thought they were Horse Clams. PK can vacillate with that one. 🙂 This is definitely a posed photo. The digger doesn’t even have sandy hands, much less sandy clothes. That nose resembles the nose in #75. Did Alva leave any notes if someone traveled with him?
