Alva Day’s journey to Alaska seems to be linked with his career in electric power. His collection contains many photographs of hydroelectric power stations such as this one. If you look closely you might make out the wooden pipeline bringing water to the turbines. Look at the rear roofline– it’s halfway up.
Coastal Alaska in 1917 sure seems to have a lot of tree stumps.

Do you suppose those are cedar stumps?
There appears to be older piling in front of the building with something very large and round laying on the ground.
Looks like snow on the higher hills on the right.
