Here is Elaine Woolston’s father, Frances, near their home at 13th and A Street in the Heights. Believe it or not that’s 13th Street in the late 1930s. The building in the background now houses the Thai House restaurant.

Nice sleepy 13th street, not today. That corner building in google maps has always assaulted my sense of building aesthetics. I guess HRiver does not have an architectural review board, or they are very myopic….

No architectural review in Hood River now. There are some design standards, but nothing that addresses aesthetics of commercial buildings directly. Downtown historic district requires Landmarks Board review, even for new buildings, but the Heights isn’t a designated historic district. Portland has an architectural review board, but they are very unusual for small cities.

Times change & we "go with the flow" so to speak. I think the building looks fine. I hope the downtown area can maintain some kind of historical status. Sally was working on it at one time with Nellie, but they are both gone now.

Complacency about the badly designed or no-design buildings will be the ruin of Hood River’s charm. Styles do change, but the Big Beige Soviet Block is not a style.
