Notes
This venerable 1908 building served first as Hood River’s high school and later as its junior high. We saw it in it full glory in this image. It succumbed to the wreckers’ ball to make room for the construction of the May Street Elementary School in 1957. The gymnasium building is all that remains from the early high school.
The sign on the front says: “This building being wrecked by Matheny and Bacon. All material for sale. 8724 N. Vancouver Avenue.” I suspect many homes in Hood River have bricks recycled from this institution.

Always sad to see the demise of buildings that now would have historical value, but such is progressiveness, if that is a word.
I agree that probably a lot of homes got use out of the used bricks.
How many students in the life time of the building got their education in this school. We will no doubt never figure that out for certain, but massive amounts.

I have heard that Methany and Bacon name in relationship to something else here in Hood River, but can’t seem to put a handle on it at present.

I was just becoming quite attached to that beautiful building.
Especially those stairs.
Although, the new school they built to replace it is definitely a beauty.

My grandmother, Katherine (Hap) Vaughan Bryant Couch, was on the school board when May Street School was built. So I suspect she was on the board when the old high school was torn down.
