Notes
It’s a good bet this is an interior view of the Hood River High School building we saw yesterday. We know several of the students in this 1922 chemistry class. Those identified are: Agnes Chipping, M.K. Scott, Margaret Pierson, Wendell Keck, Paul Kirk, Harry Tomlinson, Louis Eastman, Wilmuth Gibson, Reese Hawthorne, Walter Isenberg, George Frey, Floyd Dixon, Leonard Thompson, Dick Ford, Bob Wilbur, and Ed Volstorff.

At this point I can only tell about Margaret Pierson.. She is the third girl from the left of the picture. She would become the wife of Eino E. Annala, who was an orchardist and did a lot of writing. Many of his little poetry items used to appear in the Hood River News. She was the sister of Danny Pierson of the Oak Grove area.

Some of these students, such as Bob Wilbur, have had fathers return recently from the WWI, or "The Great War" as we learned in a previous photo.
Some have lost family members in the flu epidemic of 1918.
Bob Wilbur’s father was a HR attorney and served as state senator.

I would imagine this George Frey is the same one that became County Engineer/Surveyor and did a number of surveys in the County in the early to mid 1960’s.

I also thought that George Frey was the county surveyor, but upon looking at things I think he was too old to be in this photo. Could be wrong as I certain have been before.
Wonder if the crock was for pickles or draining out some chemistry experiment?
Dresses are getting shorter aren’t they?
Can we somewhat assume that the man in the back with the moustache might be the teacher?
Love the H on the letterman sweater, as I have one of those hanging in my closet, though a button one. One of my prized possession of my late husbands.

The Mascot shows that everyone in the photo belongs to the Class of 1924. From the size of the graduating class (74) compared to the Class of 1922 (36) and 1923 (34), it appears that 1924 may have been the first year of consolidated High School. Does anyone know when the Odell and Parkdale High Schools closed?

Does the HR Museum happen to have copies of yearbooks for the Odell and/or Parkdale High Schools? If so, I would love to get lists of the students.

Evidently, Reece Hawthorne is also spelled Hathhorn. That is the obituary spelling for his father who is buried in Idlewilde and that is the spelling in Reece’s obituary. 1904-1993
In the 1920 census it is spelled Hawthorne.

Odell and Parkdale High Schools didn’t close until Wy’east opened up in 1952.

I am glad to see it was OK for girls to take chemistry in 1922.
John Edward Volstorff was married in July of 1933 and killed in a hunting accident, September of 1933.

Agnes Elizabeth Chipping:
Born 1907. Daughter of Maude Davidson and William H. Chipping.
Maude is a sister to Horatio Davidson. William Chipping was assistant superintendent of the Electric Light and Water Company.
