This brings back unpleasant memories of 3 minutes to get to the locker, swap books, and make it to the next class before the bell. Alan Winans photo of Wyeast High School, circa 1954.
"Traffic Jam" or also known as "Rush Hour". We had 5 minutes between classes to get from one end of that big school to the other. Believe me you had to truck right along and then sometimes you just couldn’t make it. Combination locks didn’t always work on the first.second or even third tries..
We have on the far right in the wide black belt Patsy Torres. In the middle of the photo the blonde girl in the black sweater with the "Peter Pan collar" is Donna Millikan. Right behind her with the glasses is one of the William girls conversing with Margaret (Krussow) Anderson. There is a good chance that the girl back there at the lockers looking up at the photographer is Ellen (Higgins) Sawyer.
This photo isn’t taken between classes but enroute to lunch. Note the brown paper bags….

The guy towards the front middle with the light shirt and pants and has his belt buckle off center is my Mom’s step sister Joyce’s husband Bill Cannon. He just passed away last fall.

Fun rivalry between HRHS and Wyeast. Lots of good kids and friends in both schools. Don’t remember hallways being that crowded at HRHS.
Norma
Don’t think HRHS hallways were that narrow!
Arthur
Charlott, did you have to remind me of those horrible combination locks?
Charlott
I agree, I think the hallways at HRHS were wider, but there was a considerable difference in the number of students in the two schools. Just another little something to chuckle about. You had such a short time between classes. Now, not every one was organized. I recall many time seeing someone open their locker be met with an avalanche of books, papers, sports equipment and who knows what else. You had to be quick enough to cram all that stuff back in, while finding the things you needed for the next class and manage to get the door closed and locked and make to the next class on time. Such were the woes of the high school student.

I remember some HS traumas…none of them involved my locker…..locks weren’t a problem…..just lock the door open and close the door…..steel my "stuff" please…….. and yes, the HRHS hallways were a lot wider and taller. I wonder how this photo was shot….I need to go my the school and see if the builder’s plate is still there.

I look at the wavy curls in the girls’ hair and remember winding my hair up in rollers and sleeping on them. Ugh. My mom wound her hair up in pin curls fastened with bobbi pins.
Charlott
Brush rollers were something else….Especially if you got bothered with them while asleep, pulled them out and shoved them under your pillow. Guess what you woke up to the next morning….One curly side and one flat side. See Buzz and Arlen what those HRHS girls went through for you guys!!!

Like I said before, teens were alike at this time from coast to coast. The Peter Pan collars on the girls, cinch belts, neck scarfs. At the school I attended, we had four floors and some classes were on floor #1 & the next class could be on floor #4. The student really had to hustle to make it through the rush of kids to get to the steps. Fun times for all of us.

I spy a few unidentified aliens of sorts in the.very back of the hallway ..

Oh those cinch belts. It’s a wonder any of us helped produced the next generation. Remember Scarlet O’Hara in Gone with the wind? Cinch belts felt as though we had Mammy lacing up our corsets.
