Notes
This 4-H exhibit took first place at the county fair in 1948. It looks like a demonstration of wire splicing techniques. I suspect this is Alva and Io Day’s son. It would make sense his son learned how to splice wires given his father’s work electrifying the area.

If in fact this young man is a Day, I am more inclined to think that this would be Alva’s grandson, as his son Carroll would have been much too old to have been in 4-H. Nice display of workmanship. 4-H was much of a child’s life when I was growing up, especially for farm kids with the various livestock projects and programs available. Oh yes, also those 4-H angel food cakes. I made so many of those in practice and 4-H demonstrations that I can taste them even now and I think I could make one in my sleep…

One year in wood shop class at HRHS, I made a nice wooden base and used a mortar shell and hand grenade that my dad had brought back from WW 2 to make a nice lamp. He, of course had removed the powder from them. Drilled holes through them, bolted them to base and run cords through them for the light and switch. Times do change.

Like the way he unscrewed the bench seat and used it as his prop for his display. However, I bet he replaced it before he left.

Glad Charlott was around to remember all of this. The 4H program sure has changed over the years. A nice looking gentleman.

I think the lamps are examples of wood turning for his shop project which also included the wiring.

If this is Carroll Day, he has aged well. He was born in 1910 which would make him 38 years old.

Alva Day’s grandson, Dennis Day, son of Carroll Day, was born in Washington around 1939 and was living in Seattle at the time of the 1940 census. This young man looks older than 9 years of age.

As Jeffrey says, I don’t thinks this works out time wise for Carroll Day’s son, nor a son of his two sisters. So, my suspicion is, it is not a grandson of Alva Day.
Anyone have Hood River County Fair results for 1948?
I wonder if Alva was a 4-H leader?
