It must have been a pretty special occasion to get both cake and pie, What’s the occasion? Today is the 7th birthday of Historic Hood River. Since its inception March 9, 2011, we’ve posted 1801 images from our collection, each with a story. Better yet, we’ve had almost 15,000 comments added by our knowledgeable readers, crowd sourcing a local history for the whole world to enjoy. We’re currently running about 50% from Hood River/ the Dalles/ Portland, and 50% from the rest of the world. We’ve had approximately 2 million photo views over those seven years. So, yes, both cake and pie are called for!

Yes I would bet those four boys are brothers. And by the facial looks, they no doubt had a heavy handed father, and mother too. Happiness does not come easy it appears, in those days….

What a spread!
I did not recognize it as an Alva Day photo, but perfectly fitting to have one of his photos, celebrate HHR.
How long have you been waiting to post this one Arthur?
Thanks for everything you have done with this project.
What do you suppose is in the crock? Whip Cream? Or maybe homemade ice cream?
Perhaps the boys had a case of head lice. Or perhaps, their parents gave them a buzz cut to spiffy them up for the party.
However, since the clothes are similar, there is a possibility of welfare or orphanage.

When my mom was young, back in the 1920’s, her father abandoned the family. The mother and five children were given welfare assistance. She said, welfare children throughout the county were recognizable because the clothes were similar.

Not one disposable dish, cup, or utensile in sight. 🙂 Every bit of that spread would be reused again and again, instead of heading for a landfill.
Photographer’s note: the motion blur is likely a cascade effect… it’s because he had to leave the shutter open longer, which he had to do because he had to close down the aperture nice and small, which itself was forced by having subjects up close AND far away who all needed to be in focus. He did his best, and as usual, his best was far better than average.

Congratulations on the 7th anniversary! It is one of the highlights of my day to come see what you have posted every day. I hope you have at least another 1800 images to be posted.

I just think these boys were just not very happy at having to attend this "party". Boys can be that way. It was nice that they were invited. At least they won’t be needing haircuts anytime in the near future! Thanks Art for the work you have done and continue to do for the History Museum. So many photos you have scanned! Keep up the good work.

To answer LE’s question about how long I’ve been holding this one back: I just ran across it last week and thought it worth sharing. I popped in in the queue as a lighter "Friday image". It was only 2 days ago I realized it was our birthday, and we had a birthday image queued up. Happy coincidence.

Was there an orphanage in the area? I never heard of one during the ’40s and ’50s.

Those danged "pipe ringlets" on the girl at the bottom left! They were my own mother’s idea of an appropriate hair style for girls. They were a burden, and I thought they were grotesque..Bobby Nielson told my sister Dorothy that he used to think we looked like the Cowardly Lion.
