Historic Hood River
18-Mile Island

Notes
This 1951 survey of 18-Mile Island, aka Chicken Charlie Island, bears the inscription on the reverse, “It is hereby understood and agreed that no material will be removed East of the East Meander line as said line is recorded on Plat of Survey on file in General Land Office of the Surveyor General’s office.”

I would assume that the original 18 Mile Island meant it was located 18 miles from somewhere. Do we know where that somewhere would be?
Chicken Charlie I think would have been a very interesting person to have known. He would have had interesting stories of his time spent with the railroad back east and no doubt about things going up and down and along side the Columbia..
Now we know that that little rock jutting out does have a name…. Lot more land there prior to Bonneville I would surmise.

When was the present house built on the island and who built it?

I would love to see some pics of Chicken Charlie’s homestead. I understand he had a small gauge train track on the island.

Charlie’s island is fascinating.

The owners of the house on the island had an open house a few years back. Sorry I missed it.

Don’t forget to check the tags.

A good person to ask about the history of Chicken Charlie Island is Marilynn Gholston Shaw. She lives in Mosier and her parents owned the island at some point.

I am looking for information about the owner and how to contact them. Hopefully someone knows who to reach out for some information.
