Notes
This isn’t a great pucture but we don’t have many of this part of town. Arline Moore’s notes identify this as “East Winans at Sherman and First 1913. Old Hanna Barn in foreground.” “East Winans” is the Winans Addition, the part of town east of Front Street. I suspect this is actually East Eugene and East 4th rather than 1st and Sherman. What do you think? This garage was just refurbished a few years ago, but I wonder if it could be the remains of the old Hanna barn Arline mentions.

I, for some reason can’t get the modern day photo to work correctly, but I will say this is taken quite close to "Grandma" Moore’s home on East Eugene. It isn’t actually taken from her yard, but on up the hill.

Charlott, do you remember where Arline Moore’s home was on East Eugene? Which end of the block, and north or south side of the street?

Definitely. It was on the north side of E. Eugene, I think the 2nd house from the turn on the corner where it goes down and around. Though their house was on Eugene their lot/lots went clear down to I guess it was called Sherman just up from State…………It was just a big yard with a garden area. Now it is full of modern houses.

Actually the barn shown in street view is new construction, I watched it go from a vacant lot to the garage you now see. I don’t think this is East Eugene. If you look at,other pictures of the neighborhood, like the one tagged Bluff drive, there are to many houses for this to be east Eugene. It is interesting to read Charlott’s comments about "Grandma Moores house" . The house she is describing I believe was owned by my elderly neighbor, now deceased, Clarence Olmstead’s wife’s family. I believe that Clarence’s wife’s family once owned much of Bluff drive and East Eugene. Charlotte I would love to know if grandma Moore was a relative of Clarence Olmstead. Clarence lived in the house next to the barn/garage in the photo. North side of East Eugene two lots up from the corner of 4th.

Oops… I meant Clarence Olmstead lived on the South not North side of East Eugene, two lots from the corner of 4th next to the lot with the present day garage/barn.

The note on the picture about “Sherman and 1st” might be Sherman or 1st. If you look at the original plat for the Winans addition dated 1888 (different than Winans East), it shows Sherman Street named 1st Street. The streets were renamed at some point. Present-day Sherman and 1st would be in Winans addition, not Winans East.
