Historic Hood River
How Much Was It?
7-7-2017

Notes
Here’s a receipt from the Burroughs Adding Machine Company to the City of Hood River for their new adding machine. The $318.50 is nearly $8,000 today.
You can learn all about the history of the Burroughs Company and the Pike Adding Machine here. They seem so primitive, but if you read about them you will learn they were an impressive piece of engineering.

The history of the adding machine you
made available here s new to me and very informative.

In 1969, I managed a $34M budget for PNB. I talked my management into buying one of the first nixie-tube 4-function calculators (like you can get for a few bucks today) to replace the hand-crank Friden I was using. It cost about $800, which is about $5,300 in today’s dollars. I would imagine that the users of this Burroughs machine were as ecstatic about getting it as I was.

Lo and behold, there is a 1905 Burroughs adding machine for sale on Gorgenet classifieds, only $225. Interesting in it’s hugeness if nothing else.
