This fine Sawyers card shows Timberline Lodge when it was young. I scheduled this for today’s post a while ago, only to learn later that September 28 is the anniversary of the dedication of Timberline Lodge. President Franklin Roosevelt dedicated the lodge as well as Bonneville Dam during his visit on September 28, 1937.

Buzz, this morning I looked at this photo and then googled FDR’s two speeches. One for Timberline and one for Bonneville.
I read point #21 in the Bonneville speech and decided it would be best if I did not make any comments.
But…it is history.

Shortly after my dad died in 1988, I found a small notebook in which he had started writing his history, probably after he was diagnosed with cancer just 5 weeks before his death. One of the things he wrote was about being at Timberline Lodge with his best friend when they saw a line of "very official-looking cars" coming up the road. It turned out to be FDR and his entourage coming for the dedication. Dad and his friend were asked to cheer and clap as loudly as they could as the dedication was to be broadcast on the radio in Portland and they didn’t have as big an audience as they wanted! Sure would like to find a recording of that address!
