If I’m not mistaken, this is the old schoolhouse turned first Hood River courthouse, in the big snow of 1921. It was taken by Ruth Shafer.
Here is the school 30 years earlier. It was built in 1882. We still have the original plans and records of accounts for constructing it. When Hood River became a county in 1908 the schoolhouse became the first county courthouse. About 10 years after this picture the courthouse moved to the Butler Bank Building, before moving back to this site with the construction of the new courthouse in the 1950s.

Legendary rain, sleet and snowstorm in November 18 through 21, 1921. With rain a 6:00 pm on Friday night changing to snow around 10:00 pm. and continuing through Monday. Odell lost their new grade school built during the summer due to roof failure. Buildings collapsed in the downtown area. Hood River was without communication until Wednesday. PPL power plant went down as well as White River. Electricity provided by Northwestern Electric Co. in Washington.

Wow! My grandparents, along with their 3 young children (and with Grandma 7 months pregnant with number 4) must have had quite a welcome to Portland! They arrived in Nov 1921 by train from Buffalo< Wyoming where they’d been homesteading for a number of yrs. Grandpa came to Portland to complete his chiropractic training, then they were going to return to Buffalo. I guess they really liked Portland, because they didn’t go back and Grandpa hd a very successful career in Portland until 1939 when they moved to Newport
