What a cheerful group, many people in old photos appear to be going to or from a funeral.

I’ve heard the claim that people never smiled in old photos because it was too hard to hold a smile through a long exposure. I suspect that’s not true. I think there was a sense of decorum, and a serious event like posing for a photographic portrait deserved a serious face.

Not necessarily in this time frame, but in many earlier photos the reason people refused to smile, is due to the fact they had no teeth..
