Historic Hood River
Track Champs
5-24-2016

Notes
When I heard HRVHS won the Oregon State 5A track and field title at a meet last weekend, I wondered if we had any pictures to help celebrate. Here’s Hood River High School’s track team in 1924, celebrating a regional win.
Left to right: Bartley Woodyard, Coach Keeney, Leslie Kent, Rahles “Bun” Epping, Heino Hukari, Reese Hathorne, Stanley Wach, Jess Hathorne, Ernest McKittrick, Arlen McCarty, Coach Tingelstad, Glen Mendenhall, Roger Woodyard.
I think there are some misspellings in there, but I’ll leave them as typed in 1924.
I’ll bet we still have that cup in the museum archives.

Only two are familiar to me, that being Heino Hukari and Stan Wach, who was married to Ann Hanby, sister of the old county health nurse, who used to stab us with her needles, Emma Hanby. I still shutter when I think of her and her big needles coming at me….

Look at the spikes on those shoes! They look about as dangerous as Nurse Hanby’s needles.
Bill Seaton
Ray Wach was one of the sons of Stan and Ann Wach and he was in my class from grades 1 thru 12. (graduating in 1959) His mother was the head cook for the lunch program at Park Street School when we were there and then she moved to May Street School when we entered the 6th grade. She used to make some of the best cinnamon rolls I’ve ever eaten.
Judy
Jane Franz ran her a good second on the rolls!

I am not quite certain, but the last time I was in the old HRHS their trophies were still in the case there. Maybe they have been moved to the museum, I don’t know. Someone can check this out.
