We think Gladys Clark was the little girl on the front steps in Friday’s photo of the Lucius Clark home in Pine Grove. Here she is a bit older, with what I believe are apple blossoms. What a perfect photo for this time of year. Hopefully Charlott will tell us a little about her great aunt.

Gladys Mary Sylvia Clark born on 27 February 1896 in Biggs, Oregon . She married twice, first to Ralph Denison who worked for the county, but he was a "Mama’s Boy" first and foremost. She divorced him. She married Fred Diemer of New York City. in 1928. Marriage was short lived, as she died in New York City in January 1929 of pneumonia. The family had not been too pleased that she would wish to live in N.Y. City. When notified of her illness, her mother and sister set off for the east. They made it as far as Chicago when they received word of her death. She is buried in Idlewilde with her parents, Lucius and Ada Clark.
She like her sisters was quite talented. She loved to work with polyform, I think it was called. I have some pieces that she did. She went for a period of time to school at Cal-Berkeley with her sister Florence, but college just wasn’t her cup of tea, so she came home.
This photo was taken in the Clark orchard, but personally I don’t think it is a good likeness of her.. I have a number of various ones of her and she was quite stunning. Beautiful blonde hair, and in most of my photos it is long and all up in curls on her head.

I was wondering if she was blonde. There is a faint dab of color someone has applied to her hair in this image. I wasn’t sure if it was a stain or someone making an attempt at colorizing.

In those days, when traveling, did you receive a telegram at your hotel for family news?

I think there was a telegram waiting for them from my great-grandfather when they arrived in Chicago. Naturally, they turned around and came back to Hood River.
