Here are the Dalles City and the Bailey Gatzert at the steamship dock in Hood River. I think this is about 1915, based on the license plate of the automobile on the Dalles City.

Interesting benches on the dock, must be for ferry passengers as the size of the ships require using the upper dock.

The Bailey Gatzert was the largest of any of the sternwheelers on the Columbia. Her wake could easily swamp little boats and she was sometimes referred to as "The Daily Bastard." When her life as a Columbia River boat was over she was taken to Seattle where she was refitted as a car ferry and was the first ferry on Puget Sound between Seattle and Bremerton. She was so famous that there was a postage stamp of her.
Also there is the "Bailey Gatzert March." I had it in sheet music and many years ago felt it should be at the museum………..If anyone is interested in hearing it. Just do a search for "Bailey Gatzert March." There is a preformance of it on You Tube…………..

Most of the passengers on both boats seem to be looking towards the same place. Wonder what they are looking at? The car maybe?

What a neat photo. A horse carriage and an automobile. I bet people that write history of steamships on the Columbia would love to have this one.
And thanks Charlott for the heads up about the "Bailey Gatzert March". I have friends who play in the Gorge Winds band, but didn’t know about the song. There is even some history to read while listening!

In 1905 the Dalles City was damaged while in a race with the Charles Spencer.
On Feb. 08, 1906 the Dalles City struck a rock near The Dalles and was beached in a sinking condition.
One article says 4 miles below The Dalles. Another article says "while making a landing at Curtis Landing Wash.
Has anyone ever heard of Curtis Landing?
Passengers were unloaded into boats. The Pilot was suspended for 30 days for carelessness.

There is a photo online of her sinking. She must have been salvaged and put back into service, but I can’t find anything about it.
