Yesterday we saw Hood River’s beach in the 1930s. The waters rising behind the Bonneville Dam in 1937 and the subsequent construction of the interstate highway doomed the swim beach at Koberg. Hood River has a new swim beach at its Waterfront Park. This photo is from the official opening day celebrations on August 23, 2008.
Opening day comments by Mayor Linda Rouches reminded those in attendance of the new park’s ties to history.
There are many activities you can enjoy in this park, but I am convinced that sitting on a blanket watching the pure joy that kids have digging in the sand and splashing around in the water will keep us all young. Sharing that joy, I can feel a kinship with Hood River families over a half century ago, as they watched their children splash around at Koberg Beach.

I get a kick out of seeing the ‘old’ and ‘new’ Hood River … in 50 years when my (yet-to-be-conceived) grandchildren look through this archive, I wonder how they will differentiate between 2011 and 1911.

The date on this photo is incorrect. Above the girls head in the center you can see half of a little girl in a pink bathing suit standing. She is my daughter and is with my two other children. She was only 10 months old on August 23, 2008. This pic was taken in Aug 2010.

Paul, I double checked the photo source. I took the photos myself on a digital camera with time/date stamps, and they fit in a sequence of 90 photos taken the same day, including speeches and ribbon-cutting which occurred that day in 2008. I tried to get some detail on the girl in pink who you reference, but with the depth of field even the original raw image file just shows a blur at pixel resolution. Can’t even make out a nose or eyes.
