A neighbor shared this artifact with me: a tax receipt for 1932, the heart of the Great Depression. The tax lot appears to be farmland in the Fir Mountain Road area. There’s no parcel of this size in the specified quarter section, so we can’t be sure which parcel the Jackson’s owned.
I’m surprised to see a nominal tax rate of 7.7% of the parcel’s real market value. Today’s combined tax rates are roughly 1% of property value, and there is special treatment for agricultural lands such as this. This bill includes East Fork irrigation water, which is currently billed by the district instead of the county.
Note the taxes were due May 5, and this payment receipt for the first half was stamped May 4. No need to pay your taxes too early!

I have tax receipts of my great grandfather, Robert Vaughan, for Adams Addition Section 1 Lot 3 from 1905 to 1958. In 1905 he paid Wasco County $6.40. In 1958 he paid Hood River County $126.34, with the taxable value of his property being $1,325.
