And the award for the least changed business in Hood River goes to… KIHR Radio! Other than the tree growing and a slightly newer satellite dish, the broadcast offices of KIHR radio on 22nd Street look exactly the same today, though I don’t think Mark Bailey was behind the microphone back then. You’ve probably never been to this building, unless you were being interviewed or stopped by to pick up a prize or auction item.

I had no idea where the familiar voice of Mark Bailey came from. I just knew it came from somewhere in HR and mysteriously came out of my radio.

J.B. – I believe Greg Walden and his wife purchased the station from Greg’s father Paul. According to Wiki KIHR began broadcasting in 1950 and was owned by C.H. Fisher and C.O. Fisher. I have fond memories of the radio personalities of yore…

I’ve been to and in the building many times because I worked there as a fill-in ad copy writer the summers of 1960 and 1961. Roy Stave, a well-remembered English teacher at HRHS, got me the job as a summer substitute for his wife, who was the regular copy writer but liked to take the summers off. I don’t recall the name of the couple who then owned the station, but the dominant personality was John Codino, news reporter and disc jockey, who also engaged in a lot of community activities and was a very popular figure in the area. Interacting with John was my favorite part of the job.

fond memories of it being built including watching a worker eat his lunch on the top of their broadcasting tower. spent many hours being their janitor in the off hours in the 1950s as did our older brother John W.

Any time there was a fire or other exciting event, KIHR used to broadcast an on-the-spot report from “Mobile Unit No. One!” Which I always imagined to be a station wagon.
