An HHR reader has gifted the Museum a fine photo album/ scrapbook prepared by his grandmother, Katherine Vaughan, who was the class secretary for the first class to graduate from the “New High School” in Hood River (now the Hood River Middle School). I seem to have more trouble interpreting Katherine Vaughan’s Class of 1928 album than I have with most albums in our collection. While many of the images are captioned, the captions are full of nicknames and what I presume are inside jokes– one hundred year old inside jokes. The kids mostly dress the same; they mostly have the same hair styles. I am starting to suspect the high school was inhabited by teenagers.
There are several images in the album of these girls practicing this performance in front of the school. Are they spelling something out? What’s your guess?I hope I don’t regret sharing it.

The start of the Tumbling group was mentioned in Hood River Glacier, and photos are also in the Mascot yearbook. They were far from the Olympic gymnasts of today!
