Robert and Myrtle Vaughan Home
Notes
The caption describes this as the house of Robert and Myrtle Vaughan, built about 1906 or 1907. They were the parents of Katherine Vaughan. Not only is the house still around, but you probably pass by it all the time. It’s now known at 704 13th Street, directly across the street from the hospital, and a few short blocks from Katherine’s new high school in 1927. The photograph was taken from the corner of Montello Street, but the trees and a fence block this view today.
A few random facts from The Hood River Glacier: From this issue we know Robert Vaughan worked as the warehouse superintendent for the Apple Growers Association (AGA). From this issue we know their daughter Katherine Gladys Vaughan broke her leg badly falling from a tree, In this issue we know the very next year her brother Bobby suffered a bad arm fracture falling off a fence. And in this issue we learn Robert Vaughan was part owner of a parcel of almost 15 acres in the neighborhood near this house.

The upstairs room on left was Aunt Haps (Katherine Gladys) room. It became my sister Ruth Jeans room when our parents, Carla Vaughan Fahey bought the house.
Aunt Haps broke her leg climbing a tree at the park at the bottom of 13th St. They found a door and carried her home.

Thanks for posting. I actually turned on Montello yesterday. If I had seen this post I would have paid more attention to the unnoticed and hidden home.
Interesting that the front faces 13th St. Maybe in 1906 you couldn’t see the river from there.

I was just looking at the picture of the home. The 3 windows on the downstairs side were actually facing South. The north side of the house had only a single window in the living room on the north side.and single windows to the right was the bedroom window.. I thin’ the first picture is reversed.
