Historic Hood River
5th and Cascade

Notes
This area has changed quite a bit. I believe this image is early 1990s. It can’t be any later because the building to the left burned about 1995, to be replaced by the Columbia Cascade parking lot as well as some commercial and residential structures. The cannery at the end of the block is now part of Full Sail Brewery. I didn’t realize Hood River Supply was down here where the Promotion building now sits. This view certainly shows the effects of the city’s urban renewal projects of the 1990s.

My Mom lived upstairs in the Hood River Supply building in the mid 1940’s to early 1950’s.

Actually that building on the left was torn down. The one that burned was between 6th & 7th. Our Pageworks office was in the building with the curved roof from 1992-1997 which had just been refurbished by the Port. I remember watching the demolition of that building, must have been in 1993 or 1994. The night that the other one burned I went down and got all of our computers out of the office for fear it would spread.

Thanks for the correction, Rountree. I remember being on the river and seeing smoke rising from the burned building the following day.

My Mom actually lived in the upstairs apartment in the late 1940’s to early 1950’s. There were two bedrooms, and she shared one with her mother. The back half of the building was one story, where they hung their clothes to dry.
