I chuckled when I saw this image because we know exactly what is going on here. From LE’s research on this post, we know in 1925 the newly formed Hood River Elks had been invited to participate in a big Elks parade in Portland. George Thomson escorted this giant stork model. A large contingent of Hood River Elks dressed a babies accompanied him to celebrate their status as infant Elks. We also know the location where this image was captured since the lattice work matches this post of the Hal Nesbit’s gas station at 4th and Oak.
Not bad for a random image from a one hundred year old photo album.

Not the most attractive bird. I think those might be pieces of fabric cut and sewn onto the body, which would have been time consuming. I am trying to figure out what that beak is made out of.

My husband and I leased this location on 4th and Oak from Jerry Kramer. We turned the gas station in to a mini mart that we named Have Fast Mart. When Safeway moved down on Cascade, we thought that downtown still needed a grocery store. It was fun having a store downtown along with our other stores in Odell(Mid Valley Markey and Clem’s Country Store)and Cascade Locks ( Columbia Market). That was a busy time!
