I could swear I posted this before but I guess not. This view of the dredging to create the river level highway through Hood River was taken in December 1951 by Alva Day.
That’s State Street in the foreground, with the Sheppard’s Building to the far left and the Shell station to the right. You can see over the buildings to see the Texaco station at 1st and Oak, and next door Arlen’s old apartment is sticking up with both windows open. I can’t see anyone inside, though! The machine shop to the right would later become Schlosser’s, but in this view I can see maybe an ‘H’ followed by ‘u’, then a tree limb and “tte’s”.
Here’s another view from the same era showing how 2nd Street was extended to meet the new highway.

Pure gold historic photo – My curmudgeon german sheppard/husky likes a walk (from a break from laying-around-the-office) on the old gravel road/driveway just below the Kor Harrison-built monsterplexes on Sherman. This is the view from that location. Even with those modern Kor-strocities looming, that road/driveway is tucked away, with plant overgrowth and older homes, and gives off the feel of a much less developed time in HR.
