Notes
This view of Hood River from Underwood Mountain has a few conflicting indications of fate on the reverse. There is a rubber stamp of a date in Devember 1979, but I suspect that is either when this print was made or it was received into some collection. Someone has written “pre-1960” which I believe is correct. We see the river level freeway from the 1950s, but no sign of the 1962 Hood River Harbor industrial site.
This is one of the clearer view we’ve seen of the Jaymar Mill in operation.
Wells Island seems to have less vegetation than it does now. I suspect seasonal flooding used to keep the tree growth in check.

Thanks for this! I knew nothing of this vantage point…next time I am in the neighborhood I must go to this lookout point on Cook-Underwood Road.

Appreciate yesterday’s and today’s views of the changing waterfront. I have a memory blank of how we got to Koberg beach to swim before I-84 came through the gorge. Was there some road off the approach to the interstate bridge?

Cecilia, before the river level highway there were 2 ways to get to Koberg: at low water there was a road along the power lines from near the bridge, N of the railroad tracks. At high water you would go up the Columbia River Highway to the current parking area, then down a road to Koberg. That road is still there, though may be private property.
