Historic Hood River

Notes

This isn’t the finest photograph in the album by technical standards, but it’s approproiate for today and it shows why I am having so much fun with this album.  Everyone in every image seems to be having fun, there are great recognizable local backgrounds, and they’re always dressed in the perfect period fashion.

We’re looking SW on Cascade Avenue from the southern edge of the rail depot property.  That’s the old wooden part of the Mt. Hood Hotel in the background, and you can see the Hotel Oregon building and the Heilbronner Building to the right.  Between the Mt. Hood Hotel and the Hotel Oregon we see a two story residence with a classic western false front, and a one story commercial building housing a laundry.

Images of snowy days are often incorrectly exposed.  I had to push this in Photoshop so you could see the faces, but that makes the grain and the fingerprints more visible.  I suspect those are the fingerprints of the photo processor, not the photographer.

I can’t yet identify all the folks in the Thomson albums, but I’m sure we’ll figure it out who these folks are.  Thanks to Jeffrey we know George and Dora Belle had a daughter Wilma and son George Leonard.  I’ve been able to identify Earl Franz in one of the images (not this one).  It makes sense they hung out with the Franz brothers as Wilma eventually married Edgar Franz.
