This is just an all around fun post from the extensive archives of Samuel F. Blythe. Blythe was the editor of the Hood River Glacier, and his son, Edward N. Blythe, decided to have a little fun emulating his dad. This is one page of an issue of “The Sun” which appears to be dated March 18, 1893. Blythe the younger would have been 13 or 14 at that time.
E.N. Blythe does a fine job emulating the emulating the contemporary reporting style, sharing everyday items like his father’s physical maladies. “S. F. Blythe is laid up for repairs with the rheumatism. He has been taking Hood’s Sasparilla lately, and his rheumatism has been worse than ever.”
A few years later his father would not have received this issue of “The Sun” very kindly, because that is the very name Sloan Shutt chose for a newspaper which attempted to compete with Blythe’s Glacier.

Evidently a snow in the middle of March was not appreciated.

It was interesting looking at the archives of S. F. Blythe this past week, which even include part of his beard. Thanks to the staff of the History Museum of Hood River County for providing access to this and the Hood River News archives. I was able to obtain a number of copies from photographic negatives as a result.
