Historic Hood River
Twin Oaks Twin Oaks?

Notes
This O.M. Pope view of Samuel Blythe’s Twin Oaks Farm appears to show the namesake twin oaks. In fact it looks like there were originally two pairs of oaks, but one has been cut down. Caption indicates the people at the fence are Edward “Ned” Blythe, Samuel Blythe, Clara Blythe, and Emma Blythe. We learned where Twin Oaks Farm was located in this post.

In 1877 Mr. Blythe came to Hood River seeking health. He purchased 22 acres of oak covered land on the old State road west of the city. Later 22 additional adjoining acres were bought. Edward “Ned” Blythe was born in 1879, and Clara Blythe was born in 1880.

Through the fence, it looks like shocks of hay.
In 1877 was it the “State Road” or is that name from the Columbia River Hwy?

The term “State Road” pre-dates the Columbia River Highway. I am not sure how far back it goes. My suspicion is it goes back to the Dalles-Sandy Wagon Road, since it was funded by the state legislature in the 1870s.
