Historic Hood River

Notes
This spot should be familiar by now. This is the earlier dam on the Hood River, just upriver from the water line crossing (or the “end of the road” for people hiking along the derelict pipeline today).
Alva Day definitely had a good eye to capture the raging river and its effect on all that modern technology. I wonder how long before they had rail service and electricity again?
Arlen L Sheldrake
WOW……that is a raging HR….and quite the challenge for the MHRR…..any ideas on date….
L.E.
I think we have seen this before, but as Arlen says…..WOW!
Appears that Alva is not standing in a very stable area.

But now we have some more context. We know exactly where it was, and we know the date is between 1905 and 1923.

You know….when there is a duplicate of photos, I will read my past comments, and say to myself. "I didn’t know I knew that".
I guess it is called relearning history.

L.E. – the fact you can remember seeing a picture that was first posted here over seven years ago is commendable. For me, one of the benefits of getting older is seeing things that one has seen before, but not remembering and enjoying them as if they were a new experience.
L.E.
@kmb….oh I have done that also. Not too long ago, someone recognized a repeat photo, which I thought was new. On the previous one, I had made all kinds of comments. Thus the comment, "I didn’t know I knew that!"
Oh well, at least Arthur gives us the opportunity to exercise our memory or lack of it.

I generally have a hunch I have published a photo before but if I can’t find it with a quick search I don’t see harm to publishing again. When you folks find it for me I can update the keywords so I find it the next time!
L.E.
It really is a WOW photo. The smoothness of the water over the dam, the ruggedness of the water over what was the railroad, the rails clinging to the ties, the power poles which should be on land are part of the river and somehow still standing, and most of all, the hanging on the edge where Alva Day is standing and mother nature saying…."Look what I can do!"

The dam that fed Penstock pipe to Powerdale power station? They left the pipe – is there a record of the destruction of the dam? (BTW, the former owner of my house, Dick Frazier, had a term for it and it was neither dam or spillway. I’ll get back to you all on that when I see him next.
Dale Nicol
Will, Maybe it’s called a weir.

You can catch up with Dick Frazier by checking in at the Meals on Wheels delivery group. He has the longest route, up 35. What a caring thing to do.
He’s got a storehouse of memories.
