Historic Hood River
Stanley Smith Flume
10-16-2019

Notes
The Stanley Smith Lumber Company operated on the west side of the Hood River Valley. They operated a system of flumes from Rainy, Black and North Lakes to a mill at Greenpoint (now Kingsley Reservoir). From there flumes took milled cants down to Belmont and Ruthton mills for planing and finishing before shipping to customers.
This forest sure looks like it has suffered a catastrophic fire in recent years.

Is that another flume coming off the hill and going underneath this flume?
I wonder what this area looks like now.

The focus is too soft to be sure what the other curved line is. I think it’s probably just a road. My guess this is somewhere along the road up to Kingsley Reservoir (Binns Hill Drive). The slope and terrain is very similar.

I’m seeing a skid trail from the logging, and possibly a tree, perhaps a windfall that predated logging, laying horizontal to picture, and hence no good for lumber?
But tell me about the structure where the men are. I thought it was a trestle structure, but it appears to be inside the flume?

starboard, the way I see this the flume is on the right and a maintenance walkway is to the left. I think that is a tripgate just behind the man.
We’ll see a side view of this same structure in a week or two. It may answer your question, though for me it introduces several new ones.
