Notes
This view from the Arne Udelius album is exactly 81 years old today. On August 2, 1941 he snapped this view of Robert Hukari, Bill Hukari, and Gene Annala at the end of a climbing trip. His meticulous notes indicate the three climbed North Sister that day, accompanied by a party of 2 climbers from the Eugene area.

What great men lived in Oak Grove, these three are just a few of them. Gene even has his Crag Rat shirt! Living in Oak Grove, just a mile and a half south on Reed Rd, but owning the grocery stores in Odell ( Mid Valley Market and Clem’s Country Store), we were privileged to know many characters in Odell, and they were characters for sure ( Fred Wiley, Cotton Sisson, George Petriko, Bill Shute, Hank, Rudy and Butch Gehrig and many more) and then knowing the wonderful families from Oak Grove. Well, it’s a great mixture of communities in the valley. Now we are living back in Odell and it feels great to be here too.

That would be Rob at 19,his dad, WT (Bill) at 44. I think Gene was about 10 years older then Rob. This was probably one of what must have been hundereds of of climbing trips my dad and grandfather took with other Crag Rats. WT was one of the founding members.

I love the Crag Rat shirt hanging on the log. Identifiable even to someone who is not affiliated with mountain climbing.

That shirt is hanging off his sleeping roll on his pack.

Ooops. I’m on my iphone. Can’t see very well. I guess that isn’t a log.
Well, at least I could identify the shirt.

Modern packs and gear have sure come a long way from these packs. Those packs look so uncomfortable with no waist belts with hip support and minimal padding on the shoulder belts. A modern through hiking back pack setup with modern gear is about half that volume and likely half of that weight. None the less, I wish I was there with them.

Some things never change though such as the damaged, skewed, bridge. That bridge could easily be in a modern image.

Great added info all ! Thank u ! I spy matching GI wool nickers / pants – ice axes with wooden handles and matching caps and caulked boots .. and I think a can hear the rush of a alpine creek with a late summer snow melt also under the wooden bridge crossing ..
