Notes

These gents were Hood River High School students on their way to Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State University) in 1920. They were representing Hood River in some sort of agricultural fair . Following pages in the album show all sorts of cows, bulls, chickens, horses and miscellaneous livestock.

the trip itself must have been quite the adventure

Go Beavers! Actually, I had to look it up when they adopted the Beavers name. One source says between 1910 and 1916, so it would have been Beavers back then when this was taken. The two guys on the right – what are they wearing for pants? Looks almost like some leg-hugging tights, or perhaps the precursor of the “skinny” jeans we have today? I am also wondering what the little shed with windows is on the left side behind the car. I was thinking maybe this was a filling station but not sure.

The Hood River County Extension reports cover an annual trip to OSU, but I believe the students travelled by bus.

kmb: those are leggings. they were a standard part of the uniforms worn by “doughboys” during World War One.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leggings#Military_use
Just like high school boys during recent periods of military conflict (think jungle camo during the Vietnam War or “chocolate chips” during Iraq/Afghanistan), these boys seem to have adopted a “militarized” fashion sense.

wa, these boys seem to have adopted military fashion influence.

I also wondered about the leggings and the little side building.
I didn't find anything about a trip to Oregon Agriculture College, but there was a conference here in HR. From the August 19, 1920 HRG p.6…
MANY TO TALK AT LOCAL MEET
Educators from all parts of the state are expected here August 25,26 and 27,
when the Second annual conference of vocational agriculture, as taught in
Oregon high schools under the Smith Hughes act, will be held at the Hood
River high school. E. E. Elliott, state director of the department, has written
from Salem that an elaborate program has been outlined. The visitors will be
entertained by motor tours of the orchard districts, visits to the local creamery, dairy farms and truck gardens……The program was arranged under the
auspices of the Oregon state board of vocational education. The delegates will be guests at a banquet at the Iotus Grille on the second night of their stay. A part of them, it is expected, will remain over Saturday and Sunday and participate
in an ascent of Mount Hood……

There is a list of attending guests.

The military version of leggings are in evidence in images 1533 and 3036 on this site
