Historic Hood River
More Blossoms
4-8-2022

Notes
This is one of the earliest Alva Day images taken on his “Autographic Camera” which allowed him to annotate the negative with the date and other information. I live pretty close to his house on June Street, so I was a little surprised to see the date of April 28. My cherry trees are in full bloom at the very beginning of April this year. Records like this are very helpful to determine shifts in seasonal norms over time.

Nice pics ! Wondering if that might be a power pole horizontal in the back ground for a swing ?

Looks like rows of strawberries on the ground.

Blossoming and leaves can vary year to year. One year I was traveling I-84 to Portland every day from the end of February through the month of March. I watched the leaves pop out and the Gorge turn greener and greener day by day. Since then, some years, I have seen the Gorge remain leafless and colorless through the month of March

Would this be 4th and June Street? The house that Linda Holloway lives in looks so much like this house.
Maria Kollas
Yes, that is the house! 5th and June, we’re so glad it’s still there.

The house looks the same, but the land to the east has recently been developed with several residences standing where this cherry tree once took root.

I was curious about how the "Autographic Camera" worked to get the photographer’s notes onto the negative, so I googled it. Turns out you can still buy these old vintage cameras from back in the day for not much money, but not sure if you can get film for them.

Wikipedia says the film was discontinued in 1932. Alva Day had a pretty good stock and continued using it for many years, then switched to writing notes on the negatives with a white paint or ink until his death in 1955.
