Historic Hood River
Modern Soldier

Notes
These are National Guard soldiers marching down Oak Street on their way to the Spanish American War in 1898. Most of the men were on foot, but these must be cavalry officers. That’s Columbia Hall to the left (Oak between First and Second). You can see the Mt. Hood Hotel (Cascade at First) before the cupola and veranda were added.

Down or up Oak Street?
Are those sabers?
ArthurB
Well, I suppose technically they are marching "up" Oak Street as they are headed west. And yes, those are sabers.

Some history of these troops in this photo. Pretty interesting.
I had already forgotten the information. That is what is great about this site. It really is a collection of history.

I would have loved to have seen this picture when I was a young boy back in the 1940’s. At that time, I lived at 1st and Oak Streets, and knowing that the cavalry had passed right through my area would have thrilled me. I was a big cavalry fan because of all the Western Movies I had seen.

Our old friend Maltie Dukes was serving over in the Philippines in this war. Maltie Dukes deployed to Manila in May of 1898 and returned back home in August of 1899, as reported in the Glacier. There are several interesting stories in the HR Glacier from letters written back home at this time (also see Image # 2181). The patriotism that was displayed for this war and as reported in the Glacier is almost disturbing by today’s standards, but that was a different time.

My great-great-uncle Joe Lafferty from Odell also served in the Philippines in 1898, after being present at the "capture of Guam." We have a bunch of letters he wrote home from that time and in the following 20 years, as he decided to stay in the Philippines, doing photography, gold mining, etc.
