Notes

A little politics for Election Day: Here’s a young Mark Hatfield stumping for Richard Nixon at the corner of Second and Oak. I’m guessing it was the 1960 election, when Hatfield was Oregon’s Governor, though it could have been the 1968 election. Perhaps someone knows some of the younger folks in this photo and can verify the year. The photo is by Alan Winans.

    Two of the girls are daughters of Bob and Nancy Moller. Can't tell you who is who, but they are: the blonde girl in the kind of sailor dress and upnext to the little gal with the glasses is the other one.

    I am sure someone will know the others.

    Is that sign deliberately upside down, or an accident?

    I think the boy with his elbow by Hatfield's shoulder might be one of Joe Young's boys. I can remember Hatfield speaking at that corner during the 1960 election as I was standing in my dad's store watching. Just don't remember all the kids.

    That is Dale Young to Hatfield's left. Jerry Jacques behind the donkey and Mark Reitan to his left. Maybe Wes Jensen behind the girl petting the donkey.

    Are you saying Jerry Jacques is the boy with the upside down sign?

    It appears that Jerry seems to know it too.

    The two kids in front of the burro are Darrel Nichols' children. Bottom right could be Phil Henderson. Darrell, along with his “Popcorn Wagon” was a fixture in Hood River during the 50's and 60's.

    Was the 1960 election. I hope I was holding the “NOXIN” (rhymes with “toxin) sign backwards on purpose, but can't really recall. I believe the girl petting the donkey was Teresa Puddy and boy next to her could have been Alan Henderson's son, Jim Henderson. Mark Reitan, Wes Jensen, Dale Young and Moller girls are in the picture.

    The blond girl with her hand on (Senator Chuck Thompson Grandfather's mule and the blond girl to the right of the mule's rear are Nancy Moller's daughters.
    I was the photographer.
    Also, I was the photographer at Mark Hatfield's Discovery Center's (ca. 1998) dedication.
    Those images are now in the Discovery Center's Library. {Alan Winans}

    Chuck Thompson's Grandpa Vic, Hood River County's Republican Committee Chairman, asked me to check with my Natl' Guard Sargent (I think it was Percy Jensen) re, a flatbed truck to be used as a stage.
    In my (Aug/Sept) 1959 photo of Mark O. Hatfield speaking; white suited Vic Thompson sits to Mark's left.
