Historic Hood River
Logging Railroad
9-18-2019

Notes
I noticed a great detail in this 1932 Alva Day photo, so I zoomed in a bit for you to see it too. That’s a logging railroad up on the hill, complete with a locomotive, tender, and at least ten flat cars full of logs. There’s even a trestle for the train to cross.
That looks like the Pacific Power truck on the road. On the same day Alva Day photographed friends at Lost Lake, so I’m comfortable saying this is in the Hood River Valley, though I can’t place the exact spot.

Looks like good huckleberry picking country. Not along the road though. Too dusty.
It will be interesting to see if someone can identify the area.

It is probably the railroad that ran from Dee Mill to Ladd Creek on the LoLo Pass road I know of two trestles on that line and both have been removed but in 1932 there were two pictures taken of the Dee Mill crew and the Loggers at what was called Upper Camp at Ladd Creek.

Those trees appear to have been topped by wind? Occasionally there are similar trees damaged down through a pass, often near the edge of clear cuts.

@lee, I was thinking Lolo Pass road when I first saw this photo. That also makes sense given the day's travels included Lost Lake.

There used to be old sections of the tracks up along McGee Cr rd-close to Lolo pass rd. That was in the mid 80s and I worked on the FS rd crew- a couple of the old guys told me lots about it. Wish I could remember it all.

There are trestle remains at the upper switchback below Lolo Pass road.
