Notes
Kids, pets and parades seem to be standard fare for Historic Hood River. I suspect this is from one of the “Pet Parades” of the 1930s. I can’t quite place the location, but it’s probably down near Cascade Avenue and 5th by the fruit processing buildings.
The caption indicates the picture includes JoAnn Peterson and Sally Childs, though I don’t know which ones they are. The “Crag Rat Expeller” looks like a particularly harsh pest control device.

I think that is easy as to where it was taken. That is the old cannery building in the back ground.
Sally Childs was the daughter of LeRoy Childs who was an entomologist who was the superintendent of the Experiment Station. She married Charles Randall.
I don't know who the little boys are, but no doubt “Crag Mice” as we were known within the Crag Rat organization.

Crag Mice?? Great name. Do they still exist?
Looks like they are trying to get organized and ready to start the parade.

Charlott, which cannery building do you think that is?

There was only one cannery building. It had to of been on Columbia St. just east of the present Full Sail. I can't tell you exactly what is in there now.

Wasn't that the one the burned down and is now a parking lot across from Full Sail?

nels, that was a packing house which was across Columbia from the cannery Charlott is talking about. They were connected by a skybridge or conveyor belt of some sort. The cannery was on Columbia between 4th and 6th during the 1930s. There was an earlier cannery down by the depot, from about 1918 to some time after 1928. That is now “the Ruins”.
When I was checking the dates on these canneries, I found something cool on the Sanborn maps. Where Dirty Finger Bicycles is (on 13th near State) there was a “candied fruit and fruit butter” factory.
