Notes

That’s John Roberts swinging an ax up at Cloud Cap Inn. While we can’t be sure we’re talking about the same event, a July 1901 article in The Hood River Glacier describes an ascent of Mt. Hood from Cloud Cap led by the Mazamas and guided by Doug Langille, including John Roberts and several members of the Bartmess family.

Interesting comment in Glacier article that “Mazama custom of requiring all women to wear bloomers was rigorously enforced.” And a strange Mazama “yell” at end of meeting.

;A few years ago, I saw a picture at the Mazamas headquarters showing the mazamas first ascent of Mt. Hood and I can point to the one that is my great grandfather Sam Bartmess at the summit.
They had a pigeon fly to the Portland paper saying they had made the summit.

Love your pigeon comment Mary…..that is using the current high tech option.

What would that 'framing' be, picture center behind the down slope? If the main building is Cloud Cap, next to John, and we are looking West, there is no building down there….., I don't think?
