Notes
Part of the Alva Day collection was carefully arranged in a series envelopes labelled with years from 1917 to 1955. After many hours carefully examining negatives I got to the “1955” envelope. Even though I’ve never met Mr. Day, it was hard to look at his final photograph without getting choked up. Io Day passed away in January 1955. Alva took this image of her gravestone in August. He joined her in November.

I tip my hat in respect to the always somber looking man who gave us so much to remember of the Gorge and Oregon and the events that took place.
And a tip of my hat to his always smiling, always cheerful, heavyset wife with the strange name.
One of the last photos we saw of Io, she was mowing her lawn. She was no longer young and no longer heavy, and that bothered me. But she still had her cheerful smile.

The headstone is located in Idlewilde Cemetery, Block 9, Lot 24, Grave 4 and 5.

When my dad died [ Carroll Day] he was cremated and the ashs were placed
on Grandma’s casket. His second wife Aline was put there later. My mother Costa
Day died of cancer in 1948. She was buried in Seattle, Washington
