Notes

This is a view of I-80N, now called I-84, in 1967. By this point the river level highway had completely replaced the Columbia River Highway, but it wasn’t quite the same 4 lane divided highway we have today. This view is at Shellrock Mountain, and the camera is at the level of the original 1870’s Dalles-Sandy Military Road.

And there’s a Union Pacific train for Arlen.

That is what we call the convict road, as it was built by convicts. Years ago you could see a whole lot of it up there, but over the years with tumbling rocks here and there the rocks have fairly well covered it. If you are a passenger on the west bound lanes and can get the driver to go slow enough and know where to look you can get glimpses of it here and there yet. That terrain, like most has changed over time.

I think that is Grant Lake that you can see across the River on the Washington side. Along the hill on the the east side of the lake was a trail up to Dog Mtn. Lookout.
