Notes

This Crag Rats image is just captioned “winter outing.” Can someone verify this is Cloud Cap Inn, and maybe provide a rough date and some names? Based on the ski bindings we know it’s not super early.

Definitely Cloud Cap Inn at a winter outing, which generally is held. Maybe won't be for awhile due to virus. This was naturally a good many years ago. Don't know right off hand who all of them are, but on the right side going front to back…
Doc Edmundson, ?, Bob Lynch, Eino Annala, and Wilson Applegren. On the left side the only one I can actually tell is right here in the front and that is Lefty Levins.

The way this table is set, Mt. Hood would be on the left and the windows would be looking down over the canyon (Elliot).

They always had a wonderful cook in those days. Elwood “Tweet” Samuels was about the best around.

Correction….I goofed, as now I can see that very unique door handle back there on the left. So these windows are facing the mountain instead of what I originally posted.

I am not a skier or a mountain climber, but I have been in a few mountain snowstorms when I wondered if we would make it out. Was that ever a concern at Cloud Cap?

The uniquely octagonal clear glass ketchup bottles help identify it as Heinz, but they don't help much with the date… they started using those in 1906 according to the timeline I just looked up.

Most of the were Crag Rats were pretty good skiers and I don't think they ever thought too much about snow storms. If there was a big snow they could always just hunker down and wait it out at Cloud Cap.Plus by the 1950's they had a snow cat that they could ride in and out on if so inclined. Most of them preferred to ski down the trail to Cooper Spur.

I could be mistaken, but I believe the third from the end on the left side with the back of his head to the camera is Rob Hukari, and by the hairline of the man behind him, I think that is WT Hukari, Rob and Norms dad.

The date must be around the mid-fifties. The skiis just to the right of the lantern look like Head, 'deep powder', and the bindings are cable with a boot toe piece. I started skiing in the late fifties, and those bindings then were very similar. So it has been about 65 years, from 1955. The door latch and wood handle look similar to what's there today. Thanks Charlotte, I did not know Tweet was a cook up there. In the eighties, I remember Tweet, and Wilson (and the other 'old timers') at meetings in the Hut (Pinegrove). I think Wilson kept tract of 'the books' (financial stuff)….Nice picture Arthur….Yeah and this year we probably will have to postpone the Winter Outing. But we will get over this Covid stuff….

Tweet was pretty much the cook all the time. He was wonderful at that………Such a good friend to all. However, on the Crag Rat's summer outings a couple by the name of Barnes generally went along as the cooks and they were great in that capacity and both very nice people. I can't say that Wilson Applegren always kept the books as they had various people over the years that did various jobs, such a secretaries, treasurers, “Big Squeak” and “Little Squeak, which were/are the president and vice president of the organization.

First on left is Wayne Annala closest to Camera. Last on left is my dad Sulo Annala. You can see his left eye through glass lens. Across from Sulo I believe are einoa nd Gene Annala, then Bob Lynch dark hair crag rat shirt. Possibly Ned Marshall first on right, profile but not sure. I would agree WT Hukari next to my dad Sulo on the left.
