Notes

Here’s another image from Beth Hukari via Marie Pickering. Beth’s Mom Marian Gordon Hukari and her twin sister Helen were camp counselors for Camp Yallani and Campfire Girls in Parkdale. This one was processed on August 1961. Is this Marian and Helen? While you’re at it, we can use a car ID and a location.

Hark, the car is a Studebaker Lark!

These are girls heading to camp. I think the one on the left is Carolyn Beardsley. Helen and Marian were adults…

This is sort of a longshot, but it looks to me like they are on an earth fill dam that has been recently constructed, with wood debris on the right that marks the high water line of a reservoir. Possibly Trillium Lake at about the time it was created? I considered Lake Hanel at Camp Baldwin, where I worked for many years, but it doesn’t really match the terrain at what would be the southeast corner of the lake. The timeline is quite close to the creation of Lake Hanel, however, as the present-day Camp Baldwin opened in about 1962

Gosh, I just threw away my mom's little overnight case that looked just like that. The bottom was falling apart, and she had taped it up. I decided I had saved it long enough. Now I feel badly.

Location looks just like the east end of Kingsley Reservoir dam, rocky on the south side of the dam with lake, and a little road that leads to an earthen boat ramp….

That is indeed Kingsley Reservoir. I would love to see some more photos of Camp Yallani having been a camper and counselor there for many years.

These 2 are not my mom and aunt- many people know they were identical twins. If this is 1961 they both were in the thick of raising 4 children each. These 2 young women look to me to be coming to Camp to be Counselors. I was a Jr counselor at age 15…in 1972. My mom and dad(Les Hukari) were very involved with Campfire girls/ Camp Yalllani. I remember my brothers and I riding on a high stack of mattresses in the back of my dads pickup. Hauled from the Armory up Binns Hill rd- I can see how dangerous that was now but we loved it!
Mom and Helen would of been counselors way back in the 40’s. Although my Mom was Director(Miss Marian) at camp for quite a few years – while I was a camper and a counselor. Makes me want to break into song! Camp Yallani our hearts to you, our hands to you💞

Arthur you are shining light on a fervent valley tradition in it's day. If no one else steps forward to identify these young ladies, I think Al Winans if now over at Parkhurst and he might be able to ID if they were classmates of his.

Are those 2 buildings back in the trees still there? FS buildings?

I think the Beardsley “kids”, were Wy'East'ers but fellow Asbury Methodists….Carolyn I believe was the youngest….wasn't one a HR city mayor?

There were a couple of old buildings on that side of the dam… since the reservoir was for irrigation- maybe the cabins were theirs? They were taken down – in the early 70’s, I think.

Chuck Beardsley was a mayor as well as a realtor I think. They eventually moved to Salem and I think to a position as head of the Oregon National Guard. I don't know if others of the Beardsley family were in city council, maybe someone else can answer that. Nice family. Hated to see them move away.

That is Carolyn Beardsley on the left. She and Chuck and their middle brother Alan graduated from Wy'east. Chuck indeed was Hood River mayor and also a realtor and insurance agent with Hershner and Bell. He spent all his working life in Hood River. I don't recall that either of his siblings moved to Salem either. Their father was head of the Diamond Fruit cannery. As Arlen says, a very nice family.

They are at the far end of the fill (dam) road at Yallani. Those are some of the buildings in the trees. None of the building exist.

Seeing this late but it's definitely the west end of the dike at Kingsley and those are some of the buildings of Camp Yallani. Along with Susie Irwin I was a camper and counselor there during the 50's under Miss Marian. Agree that it would be fun to see more Yallani pictures! Great memories.
