This fine Sawyer postcard shows the Eliot Glacier on Mt. Hood. According to the caption there is a part of 27 people under the arrow. I can only see about a dozen, but the rest may be out of sight.
Wow, that is impressive. It looks like an old glacier on the move. I would like to see a "today" photo from the same location.

Was there a date for this picture?

It’s hard to date this postcard. Sawyer started his "Sawyer Scenic Photos" series in 1911, but as far as I can tell it continued into the 1930s at least. The company started marketing its "View-Master" stereo photo reels in 1939.

That site should be identifiable with the steep pumice/rock hillside. That must have once been covered and scraped with the same glacier before it started shrinking?

I sent this postcard image to Mark Moore, a principal with the Webfooters Postcard Club who, IMHO, knows all about postcards asking the question on when it was made.

Thanks Arlen. One source says the "Sawyer Scenic Photos" series was published from 1911 to 1917, but we have dozens from the series and I suspect some of them are later. Unfortunately none have anything definitive, like an automobile to date.

Addendum– I found a Sawyer Scenic Photos card of Crater Lake with autos from the late 30s or early 40s. I also found one of Multnomah Falls with autos from the early 1930s.

Webfooter postcard club Mark Moore says the card is 1932 as that is when Sawyer used that logo. a by the way, Mark is the new Museum Director in Gresham… if you ever have a postcard question, Mark is your man….he puts out a hell of a newsletter that is available to all at the Webfooter web site. and he likes trains…"¦..as Arthur knows, a heck of a lot of history in the "lowly" postcard this being one example..
