With many years of practice Alva Day figured out the best vantage points to document the annual American Legion climbs. This image from 1930s is about as good as it gets in my opinion.
That is a pretty dramatic view. I’m waiting for some of you to tell us what river drainage we are looking at.

Doubtful White River, depending on climbing route descent, southside would be the Sandy river drainage, Cooper Spur route would be the Newton drainage? Maybe………

Yeap, Newton Creek, they are descending the Cooper Spur route. Gnarl Ridge to the left of the Newton Ck drainage.

Definitely Cooper Spur. They had ropes up there every year back then.

Quite certain this is a Legion Climb due to the number of people involved.

This area in front of Alva is the location from which the Polish military officer fell to his death on a solo climb in the summer of 2013. His body is still on the mountain and has not been recoverd due to its hazardous location. 10-1-13
