Notes

This isn’t a great photo, but it’s the only one we have from this era. It is captioned “Dee Main Street.” I believe this is from the 1950s.

This picture is looking south towards the dead end. This pic was taken of some of the houses on the east side of the mill and there were more houses on the east side of the river remember this scene very well as my grandparents lived right about where the car is parked and we lived about five houses further right below the water tower which still stands.

A very peaceful scene. Would you have called this a “company town”?

Interesting, I did not know there was any shade or trees in Dee.

Did people own their own houses or were they owned by the mill?

Good questions, Wendell and L.E. I don't know if Dee met the definition of a “company town.” I believe in a “company town” the company owns all the houses and workers are paid in script that can only be used in company stores. Hopefully someone who knows the history of Dee can weigh in on this question.

The town of Klickitat was a company town. That is why the houses looks so similar as you enter town. But workers weren't paid in script and there wasn't a company store.

    Dee was a company town.
