Notes indicate this is the Decatur Baldwin home at 1715 West Prospect. It was the first home built on the Mountain View Addition in 1936.

The home of Harold and Katherine Bryant, at 1802 West Prospect, was built before 1940 by her father, Robert Vaughan.

Decatur Baldwin was born in Mankato, Minnesota on 26 September 1890 to Orlo and Hortense (Compton) Baldwin. He died here in Hood River on 4 July 1949. He was married to a Florence M. Rees and they had 4 or 5 children.
I don't know what type of merchant he was here in H. R. but at the time he had to register during WWI he was a foreman in the mailing department of the U. S. Postal Service in Portland.

A sign of the times. The home has replaced the one car garage with a two car garage.

Saw that too, L.E. Our house (in town) was built in 1953, I think, and its original garage is too small for just about every modern sized car. Previous owner gave up on the idea of cars ever entering it, got rid of the big garage door, put in a normal front door.

In the 1950s that was Hal and Margaret Shelton's house. Their daughter Nancy is a friend. Hal owned Hal's Mens Wear in Hood River.

Mr. Vaughn must have been a busy man. He built the house known as Dove's Rentals and the house to the east of that (next to the county building). He evidently built that one for his daughter. His name is stamped in the concrete as you leave the sidewalk and approach the rental house.

At one time I believe this was the home of Paul Sanstrum the manager of the Safeway stores, the one where Pietro’s Pizza now sits and the “new one†on West Cascade. Also one of the best Lions Club members ever!!!

I loved our house where i lived. Very close the the high school, not so close to Park Street and the junior high school. I remember walking with a school suit on when it had snowed and Mom couldn't take me as the roads where cleared then!

While researching my mother's side of the family, I came across this photo and comments. In the early 1980s, when visiting Hood River with my mother, Lucille (Baldwin) Osborne, we made a point of driving by so I could see where she grew up.
My grandfather, Decatur, owned an insurance company while living there. He and my grandmother, Florence, raised their two children (Elizabeth and Lucille) in this home.
