Historic Hood River
Condit Dam and Pipeline
10-21-2011

Notes
Our final view of the Condit Dam shows the 14 foot diameter wood stave pipeline which carried water from the dam down to the power house a mile to the south. We saw this pipeline under construction in this photo.

My thought is that that area in the previous picture where the crew is working is just behind and to the left of the dam. My next guess is that the "camp" probably was on the right side some ways back in the upper right hand corner. Full of guesses this morning…third guess is that the man on top of the pipeline is the "pipeline walker" who would be checking for possible leaks.
Though much smaller in size we have wonderful pictures of the Powerdale pipeline in 1950 when it was so cold and the leaks in the line had thrown water into the trees. An absolute winter wonderland that my Dad captured in photos.
Enough guesses for one morning….

Quite by accident, fate or something, I met the man at work, who is the explosvie man for the blasting out of this dam. I told him about these pictures and he seemjs quite anxious to see them for himself.

Farewell Old Dam………………..

I agree Charlott. I feel a bit of sadness.
But, if I had been living in 1912-13 I would have felt sadness at the flooding of the river.

I’m wondering if there were ever any photos of the White Salmon River (where Northwestern Lake is/was) before the dam was built…… It would be a great comparison to what we are seeing today after the lake was drained.

BREACHING THE DAM I CAN UNDERSTAND, BUT REMOVING ALL TRACES i CANNOT
